Many of our political and business leaders say it is time for Mississippi to change our state flag. We agree. Having the Confederate battle emblem as part of the Mississippi state flag is divisive. It offends hundreds of thousands of Mississippi citizens.
We know that changing the flag will not end all racism. But it is a step to healing and unity.
Some will argue that the people spoke in a 2001 referendum to keep the Confederate emblem. But much has changed since then.
Our own Gulf Coast Business Council now says the divisiveness created can hurt Mississippi when competing with other states to attract business. We don't need anything that negatively impacts our state's economy.
Many are very passionate when debating the role the flag played in our history. It is history. We need to put the current flag in a museum where it belongs. And adopt a state flag that represents all Mississippians.
