GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - For students, the summer time means relaxing and spending countless hours having fun in the sun. But as we get closer to a new school year, one organization is providing the tools families need to start the new year off the right way.
"We really want to give back to our community, and we want to make a difference in the lives of people every day," health fair chairman Erin Darche said.
Darche said the purpose of this health fair is to live by the Rotary motto: Service before self. In Saturday's health fair for children, she and her fellow Rotarians did just that with every kind of health screening you could think of for all school-aged children.
"Everything from hearing, vision, scoliosis, dental checks. We have exit doctors that look over everything," Darche said.
For many parents, the long waits in line were worth the service.
"They have like a little process that you have to go through. It does take a little while, but it's well worth it because you're actually able to see if they need to get their eyes checks or anything like that," Shaye Cox said.
"I think it's wonderful. Especially right now in hard times like this, so it comes in handy," Gladys Hardy
The dozens of vendors the Rotary Club provided as resources also came in handy to families. The best thing was it was all free.
"You know, with Edgewater Rotary and Rotary, it's always service before self and so that's why we're all involved. That's what we work so hard to do. We're all about giving back to the community. We do fundraisers throughout the year to help purchase these supplies," Darche said.
With 29 years in the bag, the Rotarians have no plans on stopping this big event any time soon.
