"We took care of our people first, then went about the business of restoring our mission."
Those were the words of Gen. Paul Capasso, as he spoke about how Keesler Air Force Base recovered and rebuilt after Hurricane Katrina.
Two-thirds of the base was underwater after the storm and 75 percent of the buildings were flooded.
The former base commander credits the determination of the airmen, community leaders and public support for helping with the amazing Katrina recovery.
The base went on to build the largest housing project in Air Force history.
Keesler was also recognized in 2013 by winning the award of excellence as the top installation in the Air Force.
