BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

Take a drive through downtown Biloxi over the next several weeks and you'll likely notice lane closures and congested traffic. While construction continues inside MGM Park, another phase has started just outside the fence on Highway 90. Those walking and driving by hope to see some positive changes come from the project.

"Anything's an improvement when it comes to traffic safety. Some of these places around here are very hard to walk," said Kenneth Miller.

Miller and his wife, Donna, frequently visit from Alabama and say that they look forward to more safety features being added to the section of highway.

The construction is meant to eventually help Beau Rivage employees the most. Knowing this makes it easy for employees, like Keisha Austin, to deal with the headaches the project is causing.

"Yeah, it's a little bit of an inconvenience, but I'm sure in the end it will be a payoff," said Austin.

When all is said and done, instead of sometimes having to take a shuttle to work, employees will be able to start using the brand new parking garage on the stadium grounds.

"If that's the case where we can park, that will be a lot better," said Austin.

According to Yates Construction, the median project will include an entrance to the parking garage from Highway 90, as well as a new turn lane from eastbound 90. Throughout the four week project, several lanes will be closed on weekdays in three different phases. The lane closures are making it a little difficult for drivers.

"I think it's going to be great once it's completed. Right now, it's a little inconvenient when you come out of the parking garage and you have to go up the boulevard there," said Brian Ford.

Ford was in town with his son for a conference at the Beau. He said he comes to the coast quite a bit, and is hoping to see the finished product on his next trip.

"I wish they had it right now, it would make it easier for me to get across," said Ford.

According to Yates, the lane closures will only be in place Monday morning through Friday afternoon for the next three and a half weeks.

Full-time Waveland city workers, primarily police officers, who take-home vehicles outside of the city limits could see a change to the city's policy soon. City leaders said the current policy is antiquated and needs to be rewritten into something that would benefit both the officers and the taxpayers.
