PASS CHRISTIAN, MS (WLOX) -

A summer workshop in Pass Christian is giving high school students a chance to learn more about film making. You won't see their short film coming to a theatre near you, but you just might hear of these teens going on to make their mark on Hollywood.

“It was probably 4th grade when I started theatre. As interesting as theatre is, film just has a depth to it that most people don't seem to understand,” said Alexandria Herring.

Herring aspires to be an actress, but she also wants to learn what goes on behind the camera.

“In order to understand what goes on in front of the camera, you have to have a grasp of what's behind it,” said Herring.

The workshop is taught by Richard Ward who is a professor of film at the University of South Alabama. In his third summer teaching the workshop, he enjoys seeing the students eager to learn as much as they can.

“Even for those who only have a casual interest, which almost everybody's interested in film and television, it allows them to be better more informed consumers of media,” said Ward.

In just four short days, the students learn a little bit about many different aspects of film making, and then they shoot their own short film.

“I feel like it's going to build myself up to know what I need to work on, because I can ask questions to see what I need to work on to make myself be better,” said Alexander Charlot.

The teens said they just want to leave the workshop knowing a little bit more about film then they did when they came.

“We see these small scenes that we don't think about in movies, but there's like a group of people who dedicate their lives to the small details about it all,” said Garvey Haines.

The workshop is part of the Pass Christian library's summer learning series.
