Gulfport reaches $4.4 million settlement with BP

The city of Gulfport has reached a $4.4 million settlement with BP, five years after the devastating oil spill.

City Council made the announcement during a closed-door session Monday evening with the City Attorney's Office.

The money will settle the city's damage claims against BP. No word yet on exactly how the funds will be spent.

The Deepwater Horizon explosion in 2010 sent hundreds of millions of gallons of oil spewing into the Gulf of Mexico.

Earlier this month, BP reached an $18.7 billion with Mississippi and three other states affected by the spill. Mississippi will receive more than $2 billion from that settlement.

Last week, the city of Biloxi accepted a $4.9 million settlement with BP.
