MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) -

A welcome to Moss Point sign sits at the corner of Highway 613 and Jefferson Avenue. Sometime Sunday night, graffiti that's anything but welcoming was spray painted on the sign. The words "KKK" and "white power" deface the north side of the sign.

"Right now we are investigating it. We're looking at possible leads and hoping people bring us tips so we can bring whoever did this to justice," said Moss Point Police Chief Art McClung.

Police are canvassing the area looking for witnesses. A surveillance camera at a gas station across the street did not capture images of the incident.

Moss Point Mayor Billy Broomfield would like to confront the person or persons responsible for the vandalism.

"I would ask them, why? What is the reason for this? What did the people of Moss point do to you that would cause to to act in this manner?" Broomfield asked.

The hateful messages on the sign were the talk among many in Moss Point Monday.

"Wow. It's awful," said one woman looking at the vandalism from her car.

"They're terrorizing us because we are a black town. This is terrorism," said Herbie Thompson

"You have a lot of ignorant people. Ignorant because they just don't like certain people. That right there is a shame," according to Freddie Mac.

McClung said if the perpetrators are found they will face charges.

"If it's under a certain amount, by law it's a misdemeanor. If not, it's a felony. It's called malicious mischief," according to the chief.

The city's public works department has been ordered to remove the graffiti. They are attempting to do so without damaging the sign.
