Neighbors create tribute Gulfport man found shot to death in his own home

No arrests have been made so far in the murder of a Gulfport man found shot to death in his own home.

Officers found Bobby Harris, Sr. dead in his apartment on 36th Street early Sunday morning. On Monday, Harris' friends were too emotional to talk on camera, but they told Danielle Thomas he was a good person who didn't deserve to die that way.

With candles and handmade signs, broken hearted neighbors created a memorial at the doorstep of the home where the 53 year old lost his life.

"He always had an upbeat attitude," said neighbor Thomas Charisse. "He was always kind to everybody and trying to people out. He liked to have cookouts with his family."

Neighbors describe Harris as a devoted family man who was planning a trip to Atlanta next week for his daughter's graduation.

A neighbor who didn't want to be identified said,  "He was a good guy and a good dad. He talked to his kids every day. Like the rest of us, he was trying to get by."

Just above the memorial are bullet holes. Neighbors said Harris had lived in the apartment for several years. He was on disability, but always had a smile despite his hardships. They don't understand why anyone would want to hurt such a kind man.

Charisse said, "We figure he knew the person because Bobby doesn't open the door unless he knows you."

"He never had a lot of company," said a neighbor. "Very quiet. Very polite. He didn't deserve this. He didn't deserve to be shot down like a dog in his own house."

Neighbors say Bobby Harris mostly lived alone, but at times would have family stay with him.

If you have any information in this case you are asked to call the Gulfport Police Department at (228) 868-5959.
