BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

For the next few weeks, those traveling Highway 90 through Biloxi should drive with caution as crews will begin a phase of Mayor FoFo Gilich's cleaner Biloxi initiative.

“You've got all kind of grass growing in places where it's not supposed to grow, through the cracks in the sidewalks, through the concrete medians. It looks like bushes after a while,” said Vincent Creel.

City spokesman Vincent Creel says the mayor believes Biloxi has a brand to uphold, and a cleaner Biloxi is just the start to maintaining that brand that began in 1699.

“We need to protect that brand. He wants to make it look inviting when people drive down highway 90, where it's a nice pleasant drive,” said Creel.

Creel says most drivers probably don't notice the overgrown weeds that plague the medians, but tourists do.

“We're supposed to be a tourist town. We need to look like a tourist town. So, what he wants to see happen is, let's get out here on Highway 90 and let's make a push to clean it up,” said Creel.

While the parks and recreation department as well as public works laborers are cleaning up Biloxi, Yates Construction will begin work to open up their employee parking garage.

“What they have to do is go down and remove some of the median that's there, put in new median, and make the turning bays better for employees that need to turn in there,” said Creel.

The 350 space parking garage is almost complete, and will be exclusively for Beau Rivage employees. Construction is expected to take three weeks.

The highway 90 median cleanup will start Monday. Crews will work their way from the east end of Biloxi to Debuys Road.
