GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

If Seaway Road is part of your daily commute, you need to find a new route over the next 10 days. The road is closed to through traffic to complete $3 million in drainage improvements.

Local businesses can still be accessed throughout construction using Three Rivers Road and Lorraine Road.

This phase will bring drainage improvements to the west side of Seaway in preparation for the expansion from two to four lanes.

Todd Jordan is the project engineer with the Smith Seckman Reid Engineering Firm. He says the project has gotten slightly bigger than originally anticipated. It first called for the installation of new pipes alongside already existing culverts.

"But when we got in here, we see that the existing pipe is in pretty bad shape. The joints are separated. The pipe's misaligned, materials seeping through coming from the top. So, at some point down the road, the existing pipe would cause a problem for the roadways. So, the city made the decision to go ahead and replace the existing lines of pipe in addition to the three additional lines that were called for in the contract," said Jordan.

According to Jordan, the road is scheduled to reopen on July 20.

"Hopefully, we will get through sooner than that, and we'll certainly open the roadway to through traffic just as soon as we can. The contractor will be working daylight to dark to complete the work. We know it's an inconvenience to the public, but we just appreciate their cooperation," Jordan said.
