South Mississippians attempt to break Guinness World Record involving burpees

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Want to be part of a Guinness World Record breaking attempt? A group of South Mississippians is hoping to make that a reality this weekend.

Brantley Ellison, owner of B.E. Fit, is organizing an event to break the Guinness World Record for the most people performing burpees in two minutes.

"I was always fascinated by the Guinness World Book of records when I was younger," said Ellison. "I knew with B.E.FIT's following that it was actually a possibility to break the Burpee record."

A burpee is performed in four steps:
1. Start in a standing position.
2. Drop into a squat position with your hands on the ground.
3. Kick your feet back, while keeping your arms extended.
4. Immediately return your feet to the squat position then jump up.

Ellison said he's doing this event for other reasons besides trying to break the record.

"I'm also using this free event to help promote health and wellness, local small business (that our my sponsors) and to have an all around good time on our Mississippi Gulf Coast."

The current record stands at 295 people.

"The B.E. FITTERS have worked so hard on changing their lifestyles for the better. I wanted their efforts to become a part of history. And it's not too late for anyone to make the same change."

If you'd like to take part in this event, it will be held Saturday, July 11, at the Island View Casino. The record breaking attempt begins at 10 a.m. and you can begin registering at 9 a.m. For more information, call (228) 223-1997 or click this link >>http://shout.lt/7mMC
