WLOX Editorial: Hopefully the Harrison County Jail will soon be released from any Federal control

For decades, hundreds of local lockups across the country including the Harrison County Jail, have operated under Federal Court decrees. The Feds stepped in, in Harrison county in 1995 when they found overcrowding, under trained staff, and insufficient medical care. After 20 years, the jail may be released from Federal control presumably because issues in the jail are improved.

We know that people likely made poor decisions that got them locked up in the first place. We don't think the county jail should be like a hotel. However, when the government; local, state, or federal, takes away a person's freedom by locking them away, then they must also take responsibility for those in custody and provide for their well being.

We are glad to see that Harrison County has apparently reached that level and hopefully will soon be released from any Federal control. That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to editorials@wlox.com.
