The Biloxi Shuckers-Montgomery Biscuits Monday night clash was expected to develop into a super pitching matchup. The game pitted Shuckers All-Star Tyler Wagner and Biscuits All-Star Blake Snell.
Wagner tied a season-high with seven strikeouts, but dropped a 5-1 decision to the Biscuits. Wagner gave up 4 runs, 2earned on 6 hits and one walk. Montgomery (6-4) plated two unearned runs against Wagner in the bottom of the first. Following an error, Cameron Seitzer singled, Johnny Field, Jr. reached on a fielder's choice before Justin O'Conner hit a double off the wall in left field that scored Seitzer. With Field on third base, Wagner was called for a balk which scored Field to give the Biscuits a 2-0 advantage.
Biloxi (6-4) got within one run of the Biscuits when Orlando Arcia hit an RBI triple that drove home Nathan Orf. Arcia now has the team-lead with his fifth triple and 31st extra-base hit of the season. He also leads the league with 95 hits.
Wagner was coasting through the sixth inning having retired 14 of 15 Montgomery batters after the first, but the Biscuits came through with a three-run seventh inning to grab a 5-1 lead. Montgomery belted three straight one-out singles. Wagner was relieved by Jed Bradley and he would give up a run on two hits, 2 base on balls and 2 strikeouts in 1.2 innings.
Montgomery pitcher Snell (6-2) posted the win. In five innings, the North Division All-Star Game starting pitcher struck out 6 and walked two.
Biloxi must beat the Biscuits Tuesday night to force a rubber match game on Wednesday against the Biscuits. Right handed pitcher Johnny Hellweg (0-0) is slated to make his first starting assignment for the Shuckers on Tuesday. Montgomery will go with right handed pitcher Ryne Stanek (3-2, 3.82 ERA). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Riverwalk Stadium.
