As many of you know, Karen Abernathy has been away from work for several weeks following surgery to remove skin cancer from her nose. But she returned to the anchor desk Tuesday night with an update on her health.

Karen needed more than 60 stitches after the surgery to remove a basal cell carcinoma from the tip of her nose. After several weeks of healing, she's able to cover up the scar with makeup. But she felt it was important to show viewers how extensive the surgery (known as mohs surgery) was, and to emphasize the importance of protecting your skin from the sun starting at an early age.

Tuesday night she shared video and pictures from the surgery with viewers. The best part - the surgery was a success. Doctors removed all of the cancer. Karen still has dissolvable stitches under the skin, but doctors say the swelling will continue to improve over the next month or two.

Next Tuesday night, Karen will have a special health watch report that explains what the surgery was like and why she needed so many stitches.  She'll also look at the risks of skin cancer, how to help prevent it, and what to look for on your own skin.
