BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

A bunch of school lockers at Biloxi Junior High have created a national social media buzz. On Tuesday, the people who had a hand in breathing new life into those old lockers gathered to celebrate.

Dozens of teachers, retired teachers and other volunteers gathered in the eighth grade English hallway to dedicate a very special art project, one that has taken social media by storm.

Since the story featuring the 189 lockers aired on WLOX, the teachers say they have received tens of thousands of likes, shares and views on the Biloxi School District's website and through social media.

They held a ribbon cutting ceremony to thank all the volunteers who've dedicated their time and used their artistic talents to transform the old lockers into colorful book titles. They did it to inspire their students to read, so they were surprised at the response from all over the country.

"We're just amazed that we're all of a sudden on all of these websites and how much it's caught on. We're so excited for the students to come back to school and for us to take this from the hallway into the classroom with instruction," said teacher Elizabeth Williams.

"I thought it was amazing. I don't really read books, but it made me want to start reading books," said eighth grader Laney Sala.

In July, an instructional coach from Texas will be touring the hallway to look at the lockers in person, because she wants to start a similar project at her school.

All lanes of Highway 90 are now open. A Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman says an 18-wheeler crossed the median on Interstate 10 Thursday morning, causing a deadly series of accidents. It was just before 6:00 a.m. That truck was heading west near the Ocean Springs exit. Suddenly, it veered left, crossed the median and smashed into a motorcycle on the eastbound side of I-10. The MHP spokesman says that motorcycle driver died at the scene.

We are not strangers to flooding on the Mississippi Coast. Nor are our neighbors to the west in Louisiana. There are forever ongoing efforts, planning and discussions about how to mitigate flooding. But a recent study by the Rand Corporation is more than a little disturbing.
