SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) -

The statewide primary election is a little over a month away. If you're new to your area or haven't registered to vote, there are only a handful of days left to do so.

The deadline is Saturday, which also happens to be Independence Day.

Registration is required to remain open until 30 days prior to the election. Because of this, county courthouses will be closed Friday in observance of the national holiday. They will open back up on the morning of July 4.

Connie Ladner, Harrison County's next Circuit Clerk, says that's no reason to delay your registration.

"I always say do not procrastinate. We may not be busy on Saturday because it is the holiday, but in past elections, we seem to be very busy on the deadline. So, although you will be able to register today, tomorrow and Thursday, Friday, the courthouse will be closed. Saturday, we'll be open from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. for the registration deadline," said Ladner.

Ladner only remembers one other time in her career where voter registration was available on a national holiday. The primary is Aug. 4.
