The Oaks is hosting the 2015 Mississippi Women's State Golf Championship

PASS CHRISTIAN, MS (WLOX) - Thunder-lightning and rain have had the ladies on the run.  A big rain cell was getting ready hit The Oaks golf club at two in the afternoon and officials had the golfers suspend play.

Golf carts were at top speed, heading back to the country club.

Emily Ross, who just completed her sophomore season at Southern Miss, waited out the weather.  Ross is competing in the Championship Flight.  The former Hancock High School standout...says she had a good season on the college golfing links.

"I did pretty well, "stated Ross.  "We got a few top five finishes.  I got two top-twenty finishes, so I was really impressed by that."

Gloria Dodd of Madison says she doesn't like playing golf with rain clouds up above.  She's vying for a sport in the amateur flight.

Dodd said, "Today is a very tough day because I'm a fair weather golfer ordinarily and today I'm having to play in the liquid sunshine.  So my game is not going very well today."

The Oaks general manager, Russ Bloom, spent a good bit of his time looking at the weather radar and it didn't look good.

We've brought them back and forth off the course a couple of times.

Bloom said, "A light rain turned into a downpour and Bloom says once the rain stops it takes about an hour for the golf course to become playable again."

Bloom is thankful that the Mississippi Women's State Championship golf tournament is being hosted by The Oaks.

"They want a golf course that is going to be competitive for the ladies, a good golf course, and we're happy to host, "said Bloom.

The skies finally cleared up late Monday afternoon and the final 5 groups completed Day One late in the evening.

There's a three-way tie atop the Championship Flight.  Kathleen Gallagher, Pressley Baggert and McKenzie Kelly each fired a 75.  Emily Ross is one shot back while Cissye Gallagher ended play with a 79.

In the Regular Division Elsa Foley shot a 79.  Jane Massie fired an 85, Angela Peterson an 86 and Samye Johnson shot an 87.

The second-day of the 2015 Mississippi Women's State Championship Golf Tournament starts Tuesday morning at seven.
