SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) -

There's still no word on when shrimp season will re-open in Mississippi waters north of the intracoastal waterway. That area was closed to shrimping 11 days ago because the shrimp were too small.

The closure was announced after many shrimpers had complained about the small size of the shrimp, saying the season was opened too early this year. Shrimp season in Mississippi opened on June 3. The waters north of the intracoastal will re-open once the shrimp get big enough.

"By state statue, we need to have 68 count shrimp per pound in order to re-open those waters. We have not gotten there yet. We've had a lot of rain and so we continue to sample and hopefully soon we'll be able to open those waters again," said DMR Public Affairs Director Melissa Scallan.

It's the first time since 2008 the DMR has closed a portion of state waters to shrimping.
