BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

This week Biloxi City Council members will vote on a resolution authorizing a sub-grant agreement with the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality regarding funding of Popps Ferry Boat Launch Park. The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality is offering the $4 million grant provided by BP and available to the city to improve the boat launch park.

Those who frequent the launch have a few ideas on what they would like to see improved. On any given day there's a flurry of activity going on at the Popps Ferry Boat Launch. There's always a few people spread out along the area fishing. But perhaps even more common is the use of the boat launch.

Chevelle Demers and her family just wrapped up a fun time on their jet ski. Something they enjoy doing weekly.

"They launch the boat and the Jet Ski and either head out front to Horn Island or up the river depending on what you're going to do, but to me, this is the most convenient boat launch,” said Demers.

Ward Four City Council member Robert Deming said he's heard from several about the need to improve the area and hopes improvements will not only please the boaters and fishermen, but also future investors.

"We've seen a lot of people come down to our ward and into that area and look for new investments into that area to create more water sport interaction with kayaking and different things. So this is great, because this is the start of that,” said Ward 4 Councilmember Robert Deming.

Some of the many improvements include repairing the roadway, adding picnic areas, a bait shop, concession and kayak rental.

Marvin Peerman just caught a redfish after launching his boat. He wants the city to fix the wooden bumpers at the ramp.

"Well they could put some boards on the side of the ramp. Because when the wind is blowing the boat beats up against the hard metal and that's not good for the boat,” said Peerman.

He also suggests a jetty with shelter over it. Demers said she'd like improved fishing areas.

"We've fished a lot from these piers and the boats that just come flying through, there's really not good fishing because of the waves and the lines get stuck on the rocks,” she said.

City leaders said once the grant is set in place they will bid out the project. The total grant is $4,232,097.
