WLOX Editorial: Tobacco companies should pay

The sale of tobacco products is legal, but some of the health care cost is being paid by the tobacco companies thanks to a legal settlement dating back to 1997. The Secretary of State reports $100 million per year comes from tobacco companies to Mississippi's health care budget.

The tobacco companies should pay. Just recently an additional legal battle was settled and the state will get another $15 million.

Even though the number of smokers is down, according to the Department of Health, tobacco is the leading preventable cause of disease and death in the U.S.  About 5,400 adults die each year from smoking.

We agree that tobacco companies should continue to pay heath care for every cigarette they ship to Mississippi.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to editorials@wlox.com.
