DEER ISLAND, MS (WLOX) - A Pascagoula company will build the new pier at Deer Island.

The Department of Marine Resources and Secretary of State announced Walters Diving and Marine placed the winning bid to construct the pier. The engineering firm of Brown and Mitchell estimated the construction costs to be about $310,000 dollars and the bid came in at just under $300,000 dollars.

The pier will be on the north west end of the island. DMR director Jamie Miller says that we can expect to see construction begin in about 30 days and they are hoping to have the pier finished by Christmas.

Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann says there also will be public access to the island with a boat departing from the Biloxi Harbor.

"We want access for our locals to be able to go out there," said Hosemann. "If you don't have a boat to be able to go out there and come back, and we want people to come here to stay one more day. That's such a great economic benefit."

Hosemann says the bidding process for providing the boat transportation will begin after the pier is constructed.

The pier will be constructed with concrete piles and treated material for durability, and it will be lighted by solar power.
