After three years and a $1 million restoration project, the Garfield Ladner Pier in Waveland is back. The municipal pier that Hurricane Isaac heavily damaged back in 2012 reopened over the weekend.

There are a few changes folks will notice on the pier. Using it is now free, and the paid pier rangers who once stood guard there have been replaced by volunteers. It is still open 24 hours a day.

Recreational fishermen using the pier on Monday said they couldn't be happier.

"I get my relaxation, my exercise and my fishing all in one show," said Clarence Sprouse.

"It is beautiful. We're so excited to have it back," said Diamondhead resident Mary Gobert. "We have grandchildren visiting from Illinois, so we brought them out here today. We just got here, we're starting to fish and hopefully, we have some good luck."

A ribbon cutting ceremony for the pier is scheduled for Monday, June 29, at 10 a.m.
