BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -
Brent Suter has been named Southern League Pitcher of the Week. That's consecutive weeks a Biloxi pitcher has claimed the weekly honor.
In two starting assignments, Suter struck out 12 batters in 13 innings and gave up 8 hits. He secured his fourth win of the season on June 15 pitching the Shuckers past the Mississippi Braves 2-1. He tossed six shutout innings, allowed just three hits and fanned five Braves batters at Trustmark Park in Pearl.
Suter started the Montgomery game on Saturday and despite not securing the win, he helped Biloxi beat the Biscuits 1-0. He tossed seven shutout linnings, struck out seven and gave up five hits. Biloxi beat the Biscuits 1-0 in 15 innings at MGM Park.
The Cincinnati, Ohio native and former Harvard pitcher, is 4-2 with a team-leading 1.73 earned run average over 57.1 innings pitched. Suter has 47 strikeouts and 24 walks, holding the opposition to a .231 batting average.
The Shuckers also announced that first baseman Nick Ramirez will be competing in the Southern League Alfa Home Run Derby on Tuesday in Montgomery, the site of the All-Star game.
Ramirez has hit nine home runs and will be going head-to-head against Johnny Field Jr. of Montgomery. He has 11 home runs. Adam Brett Walker of Chattanooga has ripped 19 home runs so far. Other Home Run Derby contestants include Kyle Waldrop of Pensacola who has 6 homers, Jacksonville's Zack Cox has hit 3 home runs and Willson Contreras of Tennessee has 5 home runs.
25-year-old Ramirez has blasted at least 16 home runs in each of the last three seasons and has 74 over his five-year pro baseball career. He ranks seventh in the league with nine home runs and his 44 RBI is third best in the Southern League.
