Sheriff: Professional fireworks found at home could be deadly

Professional fireworks found at a home near Gulf Park Estates have Jackson County Sheriff Mike Ezell issuing a warning to residents.

"These are dangerous explosives if you don't know how to use them," Sheriff Ezell said. "If anyone finds them, they need to call the Sheriff's Office and not try to light them."

The 22 mortar shell professional fireworks were taken from the 7700 block of Peabody Road in Ocean Springs Friday night. It's the same kind of fireworks that cities and casinos use to celebrate the Fourth of July and New Year's Eve. Sheriff Ezell said trying to light these mortar shell professional fireworks could result in death, if not properly trained. He said there's a tube that appears to be an ignition system, but it is not.

Agents with the state Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives will be assisting in the investigation.

If you have any information about these explosives, or where they came from, call the Jackson County Sheriff's Office at (228) 769-3063.
