BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

At First Missionary Baptist Church in Biloxi, Vacation Bible School for both children and adults is beginning. The mood is not like it normally would be in light of Wednesday night's mass murder of nine members of the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC.

Investigators are calling it a hate crime, during which the white suspect, 21-year-old Dylann Roof, participated in the prayer service before the shootings.

The news has shocked the nation, and it has shocked members of First Missionary Baptist Church. Many don't know how to come to grips with what happened. Some can't imagine the horror that happened.

It has made many of them more cautious, vulnerable and more committed than ever to teaching messages of love rather than hate and to not be frightened to do so.

Mike Lacy will have more on local reaction to the mass killings in South Carolina on WLOX News and WLOX.com.
