HANCOCK COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

About 30 people, including state lawmakers, city and county officials, attended the first Animal Advocacy meeting in Hancock County today.

"People in this community are passionate about their pets, and they love animals," said Mickey Evans, with the group Friends of the Animal Shelter in Hancock County.

The group organized this morning's gathering at the board of supervisors room in Bay St. Louis.

Topics included how to work toward strengthening the animal cruelty laws in Mississippi, the importance of reaching out to children at an early age and how best to share concerns about animal advocacy issues with elected leaders.

The group shared some startling statistics about the number of mass murderers or serial killers who had previously committed animal cruelty crimes. That list includes Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer and the Boston strangler, Albert DeSalvo.

Organizers of this initial Animal Advocacy event say they were thrilled with the turnout and will be hosting similar events in the future.

Steve Philips was at the meeting this morning. He will tell you all about it tonight on WLOX News and WLOX.com.
