OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -

The third phase of a six-part fishing series designed to help South Mississippi anglers is set for Thursday at the Gulf Coast Research Lab in Ocean Springs.

The Catch More Fish with Science seminar focuses on the popular flounder, a species that can be caught by hook and line as well as gigging at night.

The Encounter More Flounder seminar will be held inside the Caylor Auditorium on the campus at the GCRL from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. There will be a $30 fee to attend the event that features fisheries scientists and local fishing guides.

Anglers will learn a variety of information, ranging from habit to movements and how to locate flounder.

Fisheries scientists from the research lab will talk about what flounder eat and when they eat and discuss other issues like tides, water temperature, salinity and moon phases.

Captain Ronnie Daniels, of Fisherman Guide Service, will offer tips and secrets for catching flounder nearshore, in the bays and around the barrier islands.

“This Catch More Fish with Science will focus on Southern flounder,” Sam Clardy, of the research lab, said. “Captain Ronnie Daniels will explain how to catch more flounder on traditional tackle and will show techniques and equipment for how to stalk and gig flounder. We will follow all of that great fishing information with scientific information about the species.”

For more information, call (228) 818-8833.

Future seminars will be white trout and ground mullet on July 16, Reel in the Reds on Aug. 20 and black drum and sheepshead on Sept. 17.
