NEW ORLEANS, LA (WLOX) -
The trial for Terry Speaks, the man accused of killing and dismembering a New Orleans dancer, resumed Wednesday morning. Jurors are hearing testimony from family and friends of the victim, Jaren Lockhart.
Before any witnesses took the stand Wednesday, the judge denied a request from Speaks' attorney to declare a mistrial. Speaks represented himself during the first day of testimony, and his attorney said Speaks made several mistakes and didn't know what he was doing. The judge said Speaks had help from attorneys, and he denied the request for a mistrial. Speaks is no long representing himself.
One of the first witnesses to testify on Wednesday was a woman who worked with Lockhart at Temptations. Jennifer Swygert said the last night Lockhart was alive, she told Swygert she needed money to pay for drugs and the hotel room she shared with her boyfriend. She also said video shows Lockhart left Temptations with Speaks the night she was murdered.
Lockhart's boyfriend and the father of her child, Jeremiah Foster, also took the stand Wednesday morning. Foster said the last time he saw Lockhart was when he put her in a cab to go to work. When he tried calling her cell phone, it went straight to voicemail. He called several of her coworkers before filing a police report the next day.
Michelle Lady is following Wednesday's testimony from the courthouse. She will have a full report tonight on WLOX News and WLOX.com.
