GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

A Gulfport man accused of shooting another man during a fight in January finally turned himself into police Monday. Allen Christian Whitehead, 28, is charged with aggravated assault.

Gulfport police say the shooting happened on Jan. 29, after Whitehead and another man got into a fight on 31st Street near F Avenue.

Officials say the altercation started a few days earlier. The men did not like how that fight ended so another fight began, which led to the shooting.

Gulfport police spokesman Sgt. Damon McDaniel said the victim, who has not been identified, took off in his vehicle after he was shot in the upper torso. Witnesses told police Whitehead fired shots at the vehicle as his victim was driving away.

Investigators say the victim drove himself to the Dirt Cheap store on Pass Road and entered the business to seek treatment. He was taken to the hospital in an ambulance.

McDaniel said Whitehead is being held at the Harrison County Adult Detention Facility on a $1 million bond.
