GAUTIER, MS (WLOX) -

The Mississippi Sandhill Crane Wildlife Refuge is now trying to help another endangered species: The Dusky Gopher Frog.

Friday, a team of wildlife biologists released some juvenile frogs at a pond inside the refuge. Glen's Pond in Harrison County is currently the only place in the country where adult dusky gopher frogs live.

The goal of this new project at the Sandhill Crane Refuge is to establish a breeding population of the frogs.

They'll have to wait some time before knowing if the effort is successful. That's because it takes up to two years for the female frogs to reach reproductive age.

The frogs released Friday were transported in small plastic containers. Those containers were placed in the pond with a shade cover on top for 20 minutes, in order to acclimate the frogs to their new home.
