It's always more fun watching a competitive team as opposed to watching a baseball team that is not too good. Prior to Wednesday's Mobile-Biloxi clash, the Shuckers have rung up 36 wins and 22 defeats. That's tops in the Southern League South Division standings.
Manager Carlos Subero and his staff, along with G-M Buck Rogers, have put together a contender. That was evident when the South Division All-Star roster was released on Wednesday. Eight Shuckers cracked the lineup.
Shortstop Orlando Arcia leads the league with 17 doubles, tied for first with 69 hits, tied for fourth with a .322 batting average, tied for fourth with 100 total bases and ranks fifth with 36 runs scored. The 20-year-old Arcia is the second-youngest player in the Southern League.
First baseman Nick Ramirez was named to his second straight Southern League All-Star selection. He ranks sixth in the Southern League with eight home runs, tied for fifth with 35 RBI, tied for second with 57 games played and has posted a .287 batting average.
Outfielder Michael Reed was named to the All-Star team after batting .322 which is good enough for a tie for fourth place in the league. His .511 slugging percentage is third. Reed batted .380 in the month of June and is batting .349 over the last 30 days. He's the reigning Milwaukee Brewers Minor League Player of the Month.
Outfielder Kyle Wren watched his batting average go from .197 on April 28 to .292. The 24-year-old from Atlanta, Georgia has eight multi-hit games in his last 15.
Right handed pitcher Jaye Chapman was one of the top relievers in the Southern League before the Panama City, Florida native was promoted to Triple-A Colorado Springs on June 4. He posted a 4-2 record with a 0.82 ERA and held the opposition to a .173 batting average.
Left handed pitcher Hobbs Johnson ranks 19th in the Southern League with a 1.23 WHIP. In 11 starts, the Rocky Mount, North Carolina native is 3-3 with a 3.56 ERA.
Pitcher Damien Magnifico ranks first on the Shuckers team and sixth in the league with six saves. in 19 relief innings, the Mesquite, Texas right-hander is 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA, posting 24 strikeouts and only six walks.
Right handed pitcher Tyler Wagner rounds out the All-Star roster for the Shuckers. The 24-year-old Las Vegas native is tied for fifth in the Southern League with five wins and second with a 1.93 ERA. He made his Major League debut last Sunday in Milwaukee and returned to Biloxi on Saturday.
