GAUTIER, MS (WLOX) -

The City of Gautier needs help resorting an important piece of history.

The preservation commission, the Gautier Pride citizens group, and the Mississippi Department of Archives and History want to turn a former one room schoolhouse built in the 1920s into a cultural museum.

Right now, the schoolhouse is in bad shape. In 2013, it was named one of the ten most endangered historic places in the state by the Mississippi Heritage Trust.

City officials say many influential community members and teachers have passed through the school's doors, and monetary donations are needed to rehabilitate the structure.

Thursday, a campaign kickoff and reception will be held at the Gautier Senior Citizens Center starting at 5:30 p.m. The public is invited.
