GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -  The state of Mississippi will invest $15 million from the Restore Act to help develop a broadband corridor along the Gulf Coast. "We need to invest in that connectivity," Governor Phil Bryant told a room full of business and community leaders at Island View Casino Resort in Gulfport.

The governor said that $15 million investment will lay the foundation for private broadband support and investment. Governor Bryant told the audience that investing in such technology is critical. "Are we going to lead or just stay where we are?" the governor asked the conference participants.

Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes said his city is looking at broadband as a means of driving future economic development. The city is studying the success stories found in Lafayette, Louisiana and Chattanooga, Tennessee, both of which invested heavily in broadband projects as a means of attracting economic development.
