Kent Jones to be inducted into the Gulfport Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Every time Kent Jones touched the football, he was electrifying.

He had the ability to cut from one side of the field, quickly pick up steam, head in the opposite direction and left a group of defenders in chase, destination... the end zone.

Jones says his football running style was a God-given talent.

"Just natural instinct I believe, "stated Jones. "Just trying to avoid the tackler.  You just run.  I've always try to go straight ahead to score a touchdown, but sometimes you have to a step to the left or to the right to get there.  That's kind of what I did,."

Jones says a number of people had a big influence on his teenage years at Harrison Central, but one coach stood out from the pack.

"Seventh and eighth grade coach, the legendary coach Bobby Jones was very influential on my life on and off the field.  I will always hold him to high regard, "stated Jones.

Jones and Steve Williams came up with idea of a Gulfport Sports Hall of Fame 20 years ago and finally realized their dream last year.

Jones says to be inducted this year is something special.

"Playing the game was never just about me, "said Jones.  "It was always about my teammates, my family, fans, city and the school.  So, it's a great feeling."

Jones signed a football scholarship with Mississippi Valley State after his senior season at Harrison Central High School in 1980 and later transferred to Southern Miss where he completed his football career.
