GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Demolition is expected to begin at Gulfport High School this week. Heavy equipment is on the Courthouse Road campus set to demolish the building that was built in 1960. Crews have torn up the front entrance, and they're digging up the sidewalks.

The new high school is going on the footprint of the old high school. Once one section is demolished, a new section will be built. The process was set to start in early 2015, but was pushed back due to safety concerns. It will take 14 months to complete the new campus. Officials hope to have a  portion of the school open by the 2016 school year.

People in Gulfport voted on $41 million bond to build the new school. The bond increase also created a tax increase for residents.
