June 5 is National Donut Day. The day was started by the Salvation Army in Chicago back in 1938.

It honors the organization's "donut lassies" who served treats and provided help to soldiers on the front lines during World War I. Jumping on the marketing bandwagon, donut shops and chains across the U.S. are offering deals and steals.

Participating Dunkin' Donuts stores are offering a free donut with any beverage purchase, and participating Krispy Kreme stores are giving away a free donut to customers on Friday.

South Mississippi is joining in on the fun. The Salvation Army will be giving away free donuts from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. You just have to stop by one of four locations. Those include the Biloxi Visitors Center, the Kroc Center, the Family Store in Gulfport or the Salvation Army command office in Gulfport.
