BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

What started out as a shooting investigation at a Biloxi motel has now turned into a human trafficking investigation. According to Biloxi police, a man and his son are now behind bars, charged with human trafficking and armed robbery.

Biloxi police Sgt. O'Neil Adams said police responded to a reported shooting at the Broadway Inn Express on Beach Boulevard around 3:30 a.m. Thursday. That's where officers found a 22-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound.

The victim was taken to an area hospital to be treated for his injuries. Adams said he is in stable condition.

Adams said investigators developed Frederick Lashone Mack, 39, of Pensacola, FL, as a suspect in the shooting after interviewing several witnesses. Frederick was found in a room at the motel and was taken into custody without incident.

Frederick is charged with armed robbery, human trafficking and hindering prosecution.

Adams said investigators found a female juvenile in the room with Frederick. She was taken into protective custody and will be reunited with her family.

Adams said the second suspect in the case, 20-year-old Demarcus Reshawn Mack, is Frederick's son. Officials say he was wanted in North Carolina on charges of armed robbery.

Biloxi police distributed information on Demarcus to local law enforcement agencies and casino surveillance and security officials.

Around 10:30 a.m. Friday, officials with the IP Casino contacted Biloxi police about a panhandler on their property. Those officials told police the man appeared to be Demarcus.

Biloxi police surrounded and arrested Demarcus outside the casino. He is charged with armed robbery and human trafficking.

Both men remain in custody at the Harrison County Jail. Frederick is being held on a $400,000 bond, and Demarcus is being held on a $350,000 bond. A hold from North Carolina was also placed on Demarcus.

Adams said the investigation is ongoing. If you have any information about this crime, please call Biloxi police at 228-392-0641 or Crime Stoppers at 1-877-787-5898.
