Road construction In Louisiana causes headaches For Gulf Coast drivers

ST TAMMANY PARISH, LA (WLOX) -  It's been turmoil for motorists who drive I-10 into Louisiana.

A 40 million dollar road resurfacing project has been causing some major traffic backups.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation is working to re-pave the interstate from the West Pearl River Bridge to the French Branch Bridge in Slidell. WLOX NEWS has a breakdown of what officials say drivers need to know.

Eastbound traffic on I-10 just over the Pearl River Bridge in Louisiana moved at a snails pace Wednesday morning in an area of the interstate where the roadway went down to one lane.

"Pretty much stop and go, it was pretty bad," said New York Tourist Bruce Leshowitz.

Louisiana resident and driver Tamarcus Brech said, "A long traffic line, it was at a standstill."

A four and a half mile stretch of I-10 in both the east and westbound lanes will get a new surface. Transportation leaders say when the work is finished it will make for a smoother and safer ride for drivers.

"So we're doing some ramp closures, lane closures part of that work includes the I-10 , I-12 and I-59 interchanges. There are going to be some improvements made there as well," said Bambi Hall, Public Information Officer for the Louisiana Department Of Transportation & Development.

Heavy equipment, construction zones and traffic delays in that stretch of the Interstate is something Louisiana transportation leaders say will be around for the next several months.

"At this point the project overall is scheduled for completion in late spring or early summer 2016. In the immediate area where you see the lane closures coming in from Mississippi there will be continuous closures maybe up until the end of the summer. The goal is to have everything in that area completed prior to the Saints season," explained Hall.

For I-10 drivers that means sometime in August.

Transportation officials are urging Gulf Coast drivers to avoid the area using alternative routes including Old Highway 90 through the Pearlington community.

One other note: The I-10 Welcome Center in Slidell will be close Friday through Monday this weekend due to the construction work.
