BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - There's a definite "baseball buzz" in downtown Biloxi. With the Shuckers taking the field at MGM Park in just a few days, the excitement level is building.
Construction progress at MGM Park is advancing daily. The director of Biloxi Main Street can see the changes from her office across the street.
And she's excited about what thousands of baseball fans will mean to downtown business.
"We want everybody to come downtown hungry and eat lunch and then eat dinner and see a ball game and have a great day," said Kay Miller-Carter.
The Old Biloxi Schooner is just a long fly ball away from MGM Park.
"I'm thinking I might be catching a few foul balls where I'm at, you know. But I'm excited about it. I tell you what, baseball is my new number one sport now," said owner, Joe Lancon.
The longtime restaurateur is hopeful that Shucker's fans will provide an extra boost to a downtown that's been showing some real progress lately.
"Downtown Biloxi is finally coming around you know. Downtown has kind of been in limbo for a while, but I'm real excited about the walking traffic, like it used to be years ago. So, real excited about everything," said Lancon.
Sandbar Daiquiri Bar and Grill is another business hoping to benefit from nearby baseball.
Although they won't be open for a few more weeks, the owners are counting on Shuckers fans looking for a little post-game enjoyment.
"Once the games are over and people are getting out wanting to do something, we're right within a block of 'em. We're offering daiquiris and a full bar staff and a small kitchen," said Craig Raynor.
"It's building up a lot. We're very excited for the area and for everyone around here. We've talked to other businesses. They all seem to be real excited. Everyone is supportive of each other. And we're all looking forward to it," added his partner, Darren David.
It will be a busy day in downtown Biloxi on Saturday. Not only is there the Shuckers game and all the pre-game festivities; this weekend is also the annual blessing of the fleet and related activities in Biloxi.
