At 6 o'clock Wednesday morning, the nets were dropped on the 2015 shrimping season in the Mississippi Sound. More than 600 shrimpers applied for licenses to troll the waters of the sound.

Officials with the department of marine resources say they expect an average year. Most of the brown shrimp will be harvested in the next three weeks, but the season effectively runs through the end of the year.

One of the shrimpers we talked with Wednesday morning said the catch is plentiful, but small. Some complained the price they're going to be receiving for the shrimp is too low to actually make a profit. Others lamented the influx of foreign shrimp in the United States, saying it's killing the home grown industry.

Meanwhile, Marine patrol officers were out in force for the opening day, making sure the shrimpers comply with all regulations, including the use of turtle excluder devices in their nets. Doug Walker was on the water this morning, and will have complete details on the story tonight on WLOX news and I'm WLOX.com.

Hundreds of shrimp boats are out in the Mississippi Sound. They dropped their nets for the start of the 2015 Shrimp season at daybreak Wednesday morning.
