MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) -

If you ever travel to Moss Point and wonder where the police station, nature center or restaurants are, a special center is in the works that will help you find your way, and introduce you to some of the city's rich history.

City officials believe they found the perfect spot in the downtown district near Escatawpa River for the Welcome Center project.

"The locals called it the Old Pallet Mill," explained Recreation Director Chadwick Smith. "Then it shut down and kind of went dormant for a while. And I notice that it is a unique building with a country feel."

The city's recreation director Chadwick Smith says more than $40,000 in Tidelands Funding is paying for the building's makeover.

"This is the welcome sign. It has the old Southern touch and Southern feel. And when you walk inside, you have hardwood floors," said Smith.

The future welcome center will serve several purposes.

"It will tell you the history of Moss Point, and anything that is going on you will be able to find out - eateries in town, what to do in town. And we are basically going to sell local goods that are made in Mississippi," Smith explained.

Folks who live, work, and visit Moss Point say this is just what the town needs.

"Oh yeah, it is really neat," one resident said.

"It is great. It is the perfect fit. You can travel all over the United States and in every little tourist area you can think of and not find a better place than this that fits the environment," a local artist said.

There is no official opening date for the welcome center, but city leaders hope to have it operating and open before the fall.
