New dental clinic is labor of love

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - It is a story of love, loss and dedication. This week, more than 100 people gathered for the special dedication of “Healthy Smiles” dental clinic on Three Rivers Road in Gulfport.

What's special about this business is the story behind it. Doctors Christopher and Kinyatta Bennett met in school and later married. They began raising a family and moved forward with their shared dream of building a new dental clinic in Gulfport. He drew up the initial plans for the facility on a napkin, and they both moved forward from there.

However, with the building under construction, tragedy struck. Dr. Chris Bennett died suddenly last fall after suffering a brain aneurysm. At first, his wife was too saddened to move forward with the dental clinic, but she knew that's what her husband would have wanted. And so the dedication of that “Healthy Smiles” clinic took place this week, before a large crowd of family and friends.

"The smile on my husband's face as we watched our dream being built was priceless,” Dr. Kinyatta Bennett told the crowd, “We would talk every night before bed about all of our hopes and dreams and how eager we were to serve the community in a place of our own.”

Dr. Chris Bennett's sisters presented a large plaque with a picture of their brother and a text which outlined his life and dedication to helping others.

“His desire was to give back to the community in any way possible,” said one of his sisters, “He had a special place in his heart for assisting others; especially children.”

The new “Healthy Smiles” dental clinic is located on Three Rivers Road, just north of O'Neal Road.
