Cell Phone Problems Could Arise Spring Break Weekend

The Harrison County 911 Commission wants people to know they may have trouble using their cell phones this weekend during Spring Break.

Cell phone lines will likely be jammed causing users to have difficulty placing calls. Local cellular suppliers CenturyTel and Cellular South plan to add capacity to the systems to accommodate the heavy load of wireless phone use this weekend.

The 911 Commission recommends if you need to dial 911 for an emergency, you should use a regular phone. Officials also want people to remember to only call that number for fires and life or death emergencies.

To get general information about traffic conditions, officials in Biloxi, Gulfport and Harrison County have set up special information lines.

  • Between now and Friday people in Biloxi can call 435-6204 to find out about street closings and alternate travel routes. That line will operate between 8am and 5pm.
  • In Gulfport, the information line is 868-5980 and will be open 24 hours a day through Friday.
  • Beginning at noon Friday, the information center will be headquartered at Harrison County's Emergency Operations Center. The numbers to that center are 865-4171 or 868-4172.
