BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -
A crowd of close to 200 gathered at Biloxi National Cemetery this morning to honor those who gave their all for the sake of freedom. The rain began just as the observance began, but despite the occasional thunder clap, only a light rain dampened the dedicated crowd.
Seabee Base Commander Capt. Paul Odenthal was the keynote speaker. He chose to speak about Marvin Shields, a courageous Seabee who was killed in Vietnam after enduring seven hours of combat and sustaining two injuries during the battle.
Capt. Odenthal told those gathered how important it is to remember the meaning behind the hundreds of silent stones and small waving flags that fill this place of honor today.
