PASS CHRISTIAN, MS (WLOX) -

The state of Mississippi is just a few weeks away from opening its water for the 2015 shrimp and crab season, and what better way to prepare for the season, than with a special blessing.

Saturday afternoon, boaters gathered in Pass Christian to ask God for protection and blessing on the water.

Richard Bosarge has been boating all of his life, but commercially shrimping for 13 years.

"The independence. The romance of the sea and you know the scenery. The sunsets are great you know," Bosarge said.

For the third year, he has embellished his boat with bright colors and flags and lined it at the Pass Christian Harbor to receive a blessing for the 2015 season.

"You always have to have an edge in this business and we all work together. So if the good Lord willing and the blessing that we got today, that's what we go with," Bosarge said.

Bosarge says he tries not to make any predictions of how the season will go, but of course he hopes for the best.

"That's one thing I've never tried to predict because every time I predicted I was wrong. You know, we thought last year was going to be iffy and it was really good. It was better than average seemed like," he said.

Across from the old harbor is the new harbor where Joe Jenkins runs Pass Purchasing Seafood. He too is seeking a blessed season so he can continue to keep his customers happy.

"This of course is like any volume business and we have to sell a lot of shrimp and ice and fuel to survive, and it all works hand and hand with each other and the boats have to catch a lot of shrimp for us to survive," Jenkins said.

Whether watching the show from a far or supporting the local boaters by making a hefty purchase, the blessing of the fleet is a growing example of the city of Pass Christian gaining wind in their sails.

This was the 37th annual blessing of the fleet. Richard Bosarge took away the first place trophy for design and overall show of his boat for the second year in a row.
