GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Drivers were packing the pumps in South Mississippi throughout the day Friday and many filling up were using the long weekend as an excuse to get away.

"I'm from Houston, Texas and I'm headed to Atlanta, Georgia for the weekend," Nick Wingfield said.

Wingfield and his family stopped off Interstate 10 in Gulfport to get gas around noon. They had already been on the road for about six and a half hours and estimated they had another five to go. So far, he said, traffic hasn't been too bad.

"I left about five in the morning, so I think that's how I beat most of the traffic," Wingfield said.

AAA predicted 37.2 million Americans will travel more than 50 miles this holiday weekend, and of those, about 33 million will be driving. That makes this the busiest Memorial Day weekend in nearly a decade.

"It was kind of heavy, but it's not terrible right now. But I figured tonight it will be a lot worse," Tom Janssen said.

Janssen and his wife have been traveling for the past week. The couple from Missouri plan to stay the night in Biloxi and hit the road again on Saturday.

"Our daughter rented a condo in Florida and invited us down, so we are going," Janssen said.

The Jons family from Louisiana was also headed to the sunshine state. They couldn't wait to feel the sand between their toes.

"We are going down to the beach here first before we go," Jons said.

These vacationers noticed they are having to cough up a few cents more a gallon for gas this holiday weekend than just a few days ago. The average gas in our state is $2.44 a gallon, which is down more than a dollar from last year, but up two cents from last week.

"They are taking advantage of everything they can get, but it's not that bad," Janssen said, "I mean we've had a lot worse that's for sure."

But most admit paying more won't stop them from having fun.

"We were going to travel anyways," Jons said.

Wingfield said, "We are just going to relax, see some friends and family."
