PEARL, MS (WLOX) - George County needed a win over Oxford Thursday night at Trustmark Park in Pearl after dropping game one of the best-of-three championship finals 4-0 Tuesday night.
The Chargers made sure there would be no third and final deciding game on Saturday. Oxford banged out a 9-0 win and led 6-0 after two innings.
Houston Roth dropped a single into left center field that plated Matthew Guyton with the games first run in the top of the first. The Chargers weren't finished as they plated two more runs in the inning. Jason Barber, Oxford's starting pitcher, drove a two run double into the right center field gap and the Chargers were off and running.
Oxford added a run in the bottom of the second. Freshman Drew Bianco, the son of Ole Miss baseball coach Mike Bianco, drove home the Chargers first of two runs in the top of the third with a long fly ball to left field that drove home the run.
Oxford would keep the Rebels bats silent and the Chargers celebrated, winning the Class 5A State Title. Pitcher Jason Barber gave up only 3 hits and had 7 strikeouts to post his twelve win of the season.
Oxford ended the season with a 35-1 record while George County closed out the 2015 campaign with a 23 and 8 record. Coach Brandon Davis and his Rebels had an excellent season, but they ran up against a solid Oxford team that is ranked No. 1 in the state by Maxpreps.
