D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) -

State gaming commission regulations require new casino developments to offer a unique non-gaming amenity. At the Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort, now under construction in D'Iberville, that amenity is a world class miniature golf course.

"The project is going to cost a little over $2 million. It's a 36 hole course, it's two 18 hole courses that can be run separately," Senior Project Manager Debbie Blesse explained. "There's going to be a lot of different features in the course. Obstacles and things like that to make it challenging for different players."

The course will be built on a north section of the property. At the home office, the countdown is on for completion of the rest of the resort, right down to the second.

"We're exactly on schedule, which we're very proud of, despite the rainfall that we received over the past couple of months," Project Executive Jason Taylor said. "A couple of days that had us a little nervous, but we poured the roof exactly on schedule."

A ballet of bulldozers is making sure that schedule is kept. Progress is monitored with high tech equipment and cameras that show everything that's happening, inside and out. Even though the project is on schedule, set to open later this year, there's always that question: What if a tropical disturbance comes our way? What would that mean for the project?

"We've been here for a long time. We're very used to dealing with tropical storms. We have contingency plans in place," Taylor said. "As long as we don't get another Hurricane Katrina-type storm. Obviously there's no way to really plan for that type of event."

Back to golf. Will it be a big draw?

"I would think it is," Blesse said. "I've talked with a lot of people and they have talked about the excitement that it's generating, a lot of folks that want to come and be a part of it and participate in tournaments."

According to the countdown clock in the Scarlet Pearl administrative offices, the opening is now 204 days away. That means the opening day for the casino resort would be December 11, 2015.

The Mississippi State Legislature is back in session and as usual a fight is brewing over money. Still unresolved is what to do with  $750 million coming from BP over 17 years because of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil disaster. To the people here on the coast, there is no question that all of the money should be spent on projects in South Mississippi. But so far, the powers in Jackson and the rest of the state won't agree to that.
