PASS CHRISTIAN, MS (WLOX) - Some of the shrimpers in Pass Christian say they'll need all hands on deck for this weekend's blessing of the fleet. While the early indications for shrimp season were promising, some shrimpers aren't so sure based on the results from this week's opening of the season in Louisiana waters.
Mississippi waters won't open for another couple of weeks.
Last year, fishermen landed eight million pounds of shrimp with a value of $17.5 five million. But with low shrimp prices and high fuel costs, there's not a lot of reason for optimism.
"We're hoping we'll do a lot better than the Louisiana opening," said Dwight Ledlow, a shrimper. He added, "That's what I'm waiting around for. If the Mississippi opening is as bad as this, I'm probably going to park my boat and look for another job. We do need the blessing. We need a big blessing."
The blessing is part of Jazz in the Pass and will happen Saturday at noon.
