Community coming together to fight spice in South MS

DIAMONDHEAD, MS (WLOX) - Law enforcement officials across Mississippi are cracking down on the use of spice and warning people about how dangerous the drug can be.

According to the Mississippi Department of Health, there have been 1,200 cases statewide with 16 suspected deaths. Hinds County has the most reported cases at 305. In Harrison County, there have been 144 reported case. Pike County is reporting 105. Lincoln County is reporting 43, and Forrest County is reporting 37.

Spice contains a high amount of a synthetic marijuana chemical that is sprayed onto an incense, which is smoked.

Thursday night, the Hancock County Sheriff's Department is teaming up with parents to help fight the use of illegal drugs like spice. Officials will hold a community forum that focuses on not only the effects of illegal drugs, but parents communicating with their children. 

The meeting will be held at Diamondhead City Hall at 6 p.m.
